Witnesses with a physical disability 

Physical access to courts is very much dependent on the individual court house. The 2017 Courts Service report notes that progress is being made in relation to compliance with disability legislation.

'Accessibility

 

The Service continued to work to ensure that court buildings comply with disability legislation. The new courthouses at Drogheda, Letterkenny and Wexford are fully complaint with all accessibility requirements and legislation. The new and refurbished courthouses in Cork, Limerick, Mullingar and Waterford will also be fully compliant. In addition, the proposed new child and family law court complex in Dublin is being designed to be equally compliant.'

 The latest Report does examine the increase and facilitation of remote hearings in the face of restrictions during the Covid lockdowns.

A UCC study  'Access to Justice for People with Disabilities as Victims of Crime in Ireland' undertaken by  Claire Edwards, Gillian Harold, and Shane Kilcommins indicates significant difficulties in this area.
